Track & Field Team Took State Championship in Stride

Terry Gladden, Staff Writer

The BHS Track & Field team gave other South Carolina schools a run for their money at Saturday’s State Championship in Columbia, SC. On May 13, the team walked away with a 3rd place in the 200-meter and a 6th place in the 100-meter. Coaches Leilani Worrell (mid & long distance) and Gregory Gibbs (sprints & hurdles) couldn’t be more proud.

“Despite having a very young team, we were extremely happy with their performance,” said Coach Gibbs. “Everyone did really well.  Dwayne Curnell, a sophomore, placed 3rd in the 200, and this was his first time ever going to State!” Prior to going to State, Curnell also placed 1st at Lower State Playoffs in the 100m and 2nd in the 200.

It was a season of “firsts” for the Track & Field team, it seems. Senior Jose Agurto, after 4 years running track, attempted hurdles the first time this year.

“After only one meet doing hurdles, Jose placed 1st in the region for the 400m and 2nd in the 110m high hurdles,” remarked Gibbs. Additionally, two first time track runners, Larry Singletary and Steven White, both made it to the Lower State playoffs.

With the majority of the team being underclassmen, this puts the Bulldog Track & Field in a great position for next spring season.
