Burke High School’s poetry club members shared their original work with Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg on Thursday, February 22 at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art. Students Raven Mitchell, Mekhi Smith and Ayja Parson were invited by Charleston’s first Poet Laureate Markus Amaker to open for a reading of his new book, Empath, to Mayor Tecklenburg and a group of approximately 35-40 other listeners.
