Burke Robotics Back on the Map After First Robotics Palmetto Regional

Autobots at First RoboticsThe BHS Robotic’s Team #4748 made themselves known at the FIRST (First For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) Robotics Palmetto Regional Competition in Myrtle Beach this past weekend (March 2-4).

According to Mrs. Reed-Perrineau, it was “an excellent showing.” Reed-Perrineau went on to say “Our team won 5 matches out of 8 and our final team ranking was #27 out of 62 teams. So Kudos to the Bulldog Autobots for a great showing this past weekend.”

Burke students, with the help of Mr. Kemp, Mrs. Perrineau, and several engineers from the Citadel, had six weeks to build a robot for this year’s FIRST (First For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) Steamworks competition.

The robot was built to play a game based on a steam punk theme where the robot needs to be able to throw balls into a “steam boiler” and place gears on a tower.

FIRST Robotics emphasizes not only engineering skills but also teamwork and gracious professionalism. Each match is two minutes long and during qualifying matches teams are randomly partnered with two other teams to go against three other teams. This means in one match you might have a partnered team in your alliance and the next match you might be competing against them.

“Robotics is a great program that helps you learn teamwork skills and building skills,” says Etienna Wheeler, a 17-year-old junior.

Bulldog Autobots Team #4748 that attended the FIRST Robotics Competition included:
  • Jose Agurto
  • Kelvin Allen
  • Jamison Benniken

  • Zahaire Jackson
